Nutrition advice for gaining muscle | Peter Attia and Layne Norton

Attia gives Layne a hypothetical male patient that weighs 180 pounds and has been training for a few years and asks him what advice he would give him to build muscle.
Layne says to get protein intake up to 1g/lb of bodyweight. Says he will need to be in a small caloric surplus (100-200 calories above maintenance). Even at this small surplus he says if he gains 5 pounds in 12 weeks about half of that will be muscle, half will be fat. He would then spend a couple weeks trimming 3 pounds of fat and then repeat. He says that unless you are new to training you won't really be able to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. However, you could maintain muscle and drop fat if you are eating enough protein and working out enough.
He also says weight gain will happen kind of sporadically so it is important to test over a month not a week.
